Joseph Blatter, the President of FIFA, was the first to extend congratulations to the Cameroonian leader. Taking to his Twitter account, Blatter praised Issa Hayatou, the President of CAF, for his 25 years of leadership and commended him on his re-election. Blatter’s tweet read, “Congratulates Issa Hayatou on his 25 years of presidency of CAF and his re-election today. A great football leader.”
The re-election of Issa Hayatou for a seventh consecutive 4-year term at the helm of CAF occurred amidst significant competition. The voting process unfolded with the presence of both Blatter and Michel Platini, the President of UEFA. Hayatou, while securing another term, pledged that this would be his final stint in the position.
Drawing a parallel, Blatter, who was also the sole candidate at the age of 75, secured his own re-election on June 1, 2011, in Zurich, marking his fourth and final four-year term as the President of FIFA, receiving 186 out of 203 votes cast.
