Black Stars coach Otto Addo described as ‘top coach’ by Ghana FA EXCO member amidst AFCON failure

Otto Addo9

Otto Addo, head coach of the Ghana national football team, has garnered strong backing from Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo, despite facing some recent setbacks.

Addo is in a favorable position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, currently joint-top in his qualifying group alongside Comoros, with the Black Stars delivering promising results in the ongoing campaign.

This comes on the heels of his successful qualification of Ghana for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, a significant achievement in his coaching career.

However, Addo’s tenure has not been without difficulties. While his World Cup success remains a major highlight, the Black Stars have struggled in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification, failing to secure a spot for the 2025 tournament.

Despite this, Oduro Sarfo has come to Addo’s defense, questioning why the coach’s overall contributions are being overlooked.

“Someone was also saying that he is not a top coach. Who is a top coach? A coach who has qualified the national team for the World Cup is not a top coach?” Sarfo told Accra-based Asempa FM.

“Of course, it’s just two matches, but another Mourinho could have lost.”

Despite Oduro Sarfo’s defense, Addo’s future as Black Stars coach remains uncertain, with the Ghana Football Association yet to make a final decision following the failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.
