South Africa midfielder Gabriela Salgado won’t return to the field to play until early 2026 following an injury setback against Nigeria on Tuesday.
The enterprising midfielder was stretched off when the Banyana Banyana succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to the Super Falcons in the semifinals of the 2024 Women’s African Cup of Nations.
After undergoing surgery at Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca on Wednesday, the talented midfielder has been ruled out of action for the entire 2025.
According to Dr. Lindi Mokoena, the team doctor for South Africa’s women’s national team, Salgado sustained a mid-shaft fracture in her left leg, ruling her out of action for a longer period.
“Gabi suffered a mid-shaft fracture of her left leg during the match against Nigeria and underwent successful surgery at Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca. She will not return to play for the rest of the year,” the doctor confirmed.
Rasheedat Ajibade gave the West African Nation a first-half lead before Linda Motlhalo responded after the break.
However, Michelle Alozie won it late for her team with a fortuitous long-range strike to help Nigeria set up a final with the hosts, who beat Ghana in a second game.
South Africa will now shift their attention to the third place match against West African outfit, Ghana.
