Marcelo Bielsa is expected to make several changes to Uruguay’s starting line-up for their upcoming friendly against Algeria, as he continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The South American side head into the fixture following a 1-1 draw with England at Wembley, where Bielsa deployed a settled team.

Fernando Muslera started in goal, with a defensive line consisting of Guillermo Varela, Ronald Araújo, Mathías Olivera and Joaquín Piquerez.

In midfield, Manuel Ugarte and Federico Valverde provided stability, while Maximiliano Araújo and Agustín Canobbio operated on the flanks. Giorgian De Arrascaeta played just behind striker Rodrigo Aguirre.

For the match against Algeria, Bielsa is reportedly considering three to four alterations to assess additional options ahead of finalising his World Cup squad. In defence, Santiago Bueno could partner Araújo centrally, while Olivera is expected to shift to the left side.

The absence of Piquerez, who is unavailable due to a sprained ankle, has forced a reshuffle in the back line.

Midfield adjustments are also anticipated, with Facundo Pellistri likely to start on the right wing in place of Canobbio. Maximiliano Araújo is set to retain his position on the opposite flank, while Ugarte and Valverde continue to anchor the centre of the pitch.

De Arrascaeta is expected to maintain his role as the creative link behind the striker.

In attack, Darwin Núñez is tipped to lead the line, replacing Aguirre. Meanwhile, there remains uncertainty over the goalkeeping position, with Muslera slightly favoured ahead of Sergio Rochet.

On the Algerian side, coach Vladimir Petković is expected to field his strongest available team. After rotating his squad in a dominant 7-0 win over Guatemala in their previous friendly, the Fennecs are set to approach this encounter with full strength.

The match presents both teams with a valuable opportunity to fine-tune their squads, as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
