Bernardo Silva has underlined Vinicius Junior’s importance to Real Madrid as the Brazil forward continues to face intense criticism during a difficult period.
Vinicius has struggled to reproduce the form that has made him a key player for the Spanish club. His problems have been compounded by a four-match suspension in La Liga and the impressive performances of team-mate Yan Diomande on the left wing.
The forward featured for Real Madrid against AEK Athens in the Champions League the previous day, but produced a subdued display. That performance led to further scrutiny of his current form.
Silva, speaking as quoted by AS, said he had been made to feel at home after joining the squad.
“I am extremely happy. The team welcomed me as part of the family,” said the Portuguese player. “I am very happy in Madrid. I am working hard to improve and to strengthen my relationship with my team-mates.”
He then defended Vinicius, pointing to the Brazilian’s contribution to Real Madrid over recent seasons.
“Vinicius Junior has been a very important player for Real Madrid in recent years, and everyone at the club understands how important he is,” Silva said.
The Portugal international also stressed that Real Madrid need a player with Vinicius’ qualities if they are to continue winning.
“We need a player of this type to be able to win,” he added.
Vinicius’ latest appearance came as criticism of his performances increased, while Diomande’s form on the left has provided further competition for his place. However, Silva’s comments make clear that the club continue to regard the Brazil forward as an important part of the team.
