Berkane triumphs again as ASEC Mimosas stumble in CAF Confederation Cup

The second round of the CAF Confederation Cup group stage unfolded on Sunday, December 8, with pivotal matches across the continent showcasing high stakes and dramatic outcomes.

Renaissance Sportive Berkane, runners-up in last year’s tournament, solidified their commanding start in Group B with a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch in South Africa.

The Moroccan side demonstrated their attacking prowess early on, with Youssef Zghoudi delivering a quick-fire brace in the opening quarter of an hour, scoring in the 5th and 15th minutes.

The visitors sealed the match late, courtesy of a third goal by Hajji in the 83rd minute.

Stellenbosch managed a consolation through Butsaka in the 87th minute but never looked like overturning the deficit.

The win propels Berkane to six points from two matches, firmly establishing them at the top of the group.

Elsewhere in Group B, Stade Malien struggled to break down CD Lunda Sul, settling for a 1-1 draw in Angola.

Despite their efforts, the Malian club now trails Berkane by two points, leaving them with work to do in the remaining fixtures.

In Group C, ASEC Mimosas endured a frustrating outing in Botswana, playing out a goalless draw against Orapa United.

Despite dominating possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities, the Ivorian giants were unable to find a breakthrough against the group’s underdog side.

The result sees ASEC Mimosas retain their position at the top of the group with four points, though their lead remains tentative.

They now await the outcome of the clash between USM Alger and Jaraaf of Dakar, which could alter the standings in Group C.

The second matchday results underscore the unpredictable nature of the CAF Confederation Cup, with some favorites living up to expectations while others falter.

Berkane’s commanding performances position them as early contenders, while ASEC Mimosas will need to sharpen their finishing as the competition progresses.

With the group stage heating up, all eyes will be on the upcoming fixtures as teams jostle for the coveted top spots that lead to the knockout rounds.
