Liverpool Close In on Christian Benteke as Striker Prefers Anfield Move
Christian Benteke is edging closer to a move to Liverpool, with reports suggesting the Belgian international has set his sights on joining the Merseyside club despite previous interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
According to a talkSPORT correspondent based in Liverpool, the Aston Villa striker, who is of Congolese descent, has ruled out a move to Spurs and is pushing for a transfer to Anfield. While Liverpool had recently cooled their pursuit, the deal now appears to be gaining momentum.
Aston Villa had initially demanded €45 million (£32 million) for the 24-year-old forward, believed to be the value of his release clause. However, sources suggest a compromise could be reached for a fee closer to €25 million (£18 million), a figure Liverpool may consider more realistic.
Benteke enjoyed a strong 2014–15 campaign, scoring 15 Premier League goals and playing a crucial role in Aston Villa’s survival under Tim Sherwood. His power, aerial threat, and ability to lead the line have made him one of the most sought-after forwards in English football.
Liverpool, who are looking to reinforce their attacking options following the departure of Raheem Sterling and the continued uncertainty over Daniel Sturridge’s fitness, see Benteke as a key target to bolster Brendan Rodgers’ front line.
Should the deal go through, Benteke would become one of Liverpool’s major summer signings, joining the likes of James Milner, Nathaniel Clyne, and Roberto Firmino as part of a significant squad overhaul.
An official announcement could follow in the coming days, pending final agreement between the clubs and a medical.
