Benni McCarthy, the renowned South African football icon, is poised to take the helm of Kenya’s national team, the Harambee Stars.
This follows initial discussions that took place in December regarding the vacant coaching position, left open after Engin Firat’s resignation.
Despite the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) expressing intentions to finalize McCarthy’s appointment swiftly, complications have emerged that are delaying the process.
While the FKF remains committed to bringing McCarthy on board, they are currently addressing internal issues that must be resolved first.
Recent revelations from the Transition Ad Hoc Committee have highlighted significant financial strains within the federation, reporting debts exceeding $2.6 million and numerous ongoing legal disputes.
These findings underscore the need for a stable environment for McCarthy to succeed as the coach.
The FKF is under pressure to secure adequate funding and settle its debts before finalizing McCarthy’s contract, which is expected to be for two years, alongside one assistant coach from South Africa and another from Kenya.
With the 2026 World Cup qualifiers approaching in March, time is of the essence for the federation as they aim to have McCarthy in place to lead the team against The Gambia and Gabon.
