South African football icon and former Manchester United striker Benni McCarthy has shared insights into a potential coaching position with one of the Soweto giants that ultimately did not materialize.
After parting ways with Manchester United at the end of his contract in June, McCarthy became a free agent, prompting speculation about a return to South Africa in a coaching capacity.
Reports had linked him to Kaizer Chiefs, who opted for Nasreddine Nabi, and Mamelodi Sundowns, which appointed Manqoba Mngqithi following the exit of Rulani Mokwena.
Although McCarthy denied any formal negotiations with these clubs, he did reveal past discussions with Orlando Pirates’ chairman Irvin Khoza regarding a coaching role.
Reflecting on his experience, McCarthy stated, “There was a chance way before Jose Riveiro came to Pirates,” during an appearance on Radio2000’s Game On.
He noted that the opportunity was nearly finalized, but Khoza ultimately chose a candidate with more coaching experience.
McCarthy expressed confidence in his ability to succeed, stating, “I believe I would have done an amazing job with the players Pirates had at the time.”
He emphasized that had he been appointed, the results would have been spectacular, comparing it to the successful coaching era of Pitso Mosimane at Sundowns.
