Kenya coach Benni McCarthy sets bold ambition for Harambee Stars

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy struggled to hold back tears as he paid an emotional tribute to his former FC Porto teammate Jorge Costa, who passed away aged 53 following a cardiac arrest at Porto’s training facility on Tuesday, August 5.

McCarthy, who is currently leading Kenya at the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), was overcome with emotion when asked about Costa’s death during a pre-match press conference ahead of Kenya’s second group game against Angola.

The South African tactician bowed his head in silence, visibly shaken, before eventually composing himself to speak about the man he described as a “leader” and “brother.”

“Yesterday was difficult since receiving the sad news,” he said, struggling to hold back tears. “It is difficult to believe considering he was still young… It was a privilege to have touched him and played with him.”

Costa, affectionately known as Bicho (animal) and Tanque (tank) for his uncompromising style, captained FC Porto to numerous titles, including eight Primeira Liga championships and the UEFA Champions League in 2004.

McCarthy recalled their special bond, formed when he joined the Portuguese side as a young striker.

“He was like an elder brother,” McCarthy reflected. “When I joined Porto, he took me under his wing… I have immense respect and admiration for him.”

Their friendship extended beyond the pitch, with McCarthy expressing deep regret that he never got the chance to say goodbye. “He is not gone, nor forgotten,” he added. “We will carry the best of him in our hearts.”

Costa also earned 50 caps for Portugal and later managed several clubs and national sides, including Gabon.

At the time of his death, he was serving as director of football at Porto — the club he led with distinction for much of his career.
