Benjamin Moukandjo: The Cameroonian Explains His Departure from Reims

Benjamin Moukandjo Opens Up About His Departure from Reims

Just a year after his move from Stade de Reims to FC Lorient, Benjamin Moukandjo is set to return to the Stade Auguste Delaune this Saturday for the fourth round of Ligue 1. On the eve of the reunion, the Cameroonian international has finally broken his silence about the reasons behind his departure from Reims.

“I wanted to stay at Reims, and I received offers of an extension from the president. Most people wanted me to stay,” Moukandjo told Ouest France. “But there was unease. I made the decision to leave. After that, there are always things that are said, but I don’t want to get involved in that game—I don’t like conflicts.”

Reflecting on his time in Reims, the Lorient striker stressed that he had a positive experience with the squad. “I had a good year at Reims, I got on well with all the players.”

What bothered Moukandjo, however, were the rumors that circulated after his exit. “Honestly, what I didn’t like was reading and hearing that I left Reims because I was afraid of competition. It made me smile because in football, competition exists everywhere. I told myself that I wasn’t respected.”

Now focused on his career with Lorient, Moukandjo will be hoping to let his football do the talking when he faces his former side this weekend.
