Bastia Secure Benjamin Mokulu on Season-Long Loan from Mechelen
French Ligue 1 side SC Bastia have bolstered their attacking options with the loan signing of striker Benjamin Mokulu from Belgian club Mechelen. The 24-year-old forward has joined the Corsican club for the upcoming season, with an option to make the deal permanent.
Mokulu, who previously flew under the radar in Belgium, has already passed his medical and met his new teammates, Bastia confirmed on their official website. The club highlighted his international experience, noting that after representing Belgium at youth levels, Mokulu ultimately pledged his international allegiance to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He earned his first senior cap for DR Congo on 9 February 2011 in a match against Gabon.
Bastia view Mokulu as a potential replacement for Brandao, who is currently sidelined following a suspension incurred after a headbutt incident involving Paris Saint-Germain’s Thiago Motta. The club has also expressed a desire to part ways with the veteran striker, making Mokulu’s arrival timely.
The loan deal offers Bastia flexibility, allowing them to assess Mokulu’s impact in Ligue 1 with the option to secure his services on a permanent basis should he impress during the campaign.
