The first Maracana championship opened in Cotonou, Benin, featuring both Senior and Veterans categories. The competition involves eight teams in each category, showcasing the growing interest in Maracana, a sport played on foot in a handball court with six players on each team and four reserves.
In the Senior category, the participating teams include the Beninese Association of Friends of Maracana (ABAM), Asa delegation, Godomey Maracana club, Amitié, Copa Cabana, Pobé Maracana club, Prestige Maracana club of Abomey, and Comè.
Similarly, in the Veterans category, eight clubs are vying for the title, namely Godomey Maracaña club, Raf de Hêvié, Amitié, 2AFAC, Asa Délégation, Pobé Maracaña club, Comè, and Prestige Maracaña club d’Abomey.
Maracana, with its unique format and rules, is gaining popularity, and this championship serves as a precursor to the second edition of the African Cup of Nations in the discipline. Benin is set to host the tournament, scheduled to take place from August 14 onwards, further promoting the sport in the region.
