Benin rally to draw with Burkina Faso in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying

Benin came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw with Burkina Faso in the opening round of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying in Group F on Friday.

Burkina Faso made the stronger start and took the lead in the 20th minute when Lassina Traore converted a penalty. The goal gave the Stallions a narrow advantage at half-time after a closely contested first half.

Benin had spent much of the match trailing but were eventually rewarded with a penalty of their own. Aiyegun Tosin made no mistake from the spot in the 68th minute, restoring parity for the Cheetahs.

Neither side could find a winning goal after Benin’s equaliser, leaving both teams with a point from their first Group F fixture. The result means their campaigns begin with identical records.

Benin will now turn their attention to their next match against Mauritania on 29 September. Burkina Faso will attempt to claim their first victory when they face Central African Republic on 28 September.
