Benin coach Gernot Rohr sees opportunity despite tough AFCON 2027 draw
Benin head coach Gernot Rohr has expressed cautious optimism over his side’s chances of reaching the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after describing their qualifying group as competitive but open.
The 72-year-old reacted to the draw by acknowledging the difficulty of Group F, where Benin will face Burkina Faso, Mauritania and the Central African Republic.
Despite the challenges, Rohr believes the group offers genuine opportunities for qualification.
In his assessment, Burkina Faso stand out as the strongest side in the group and are expected to be the main contenders for top spot.
He also highlighted Mauritania as a dangerous opponent, referencing their recent performances at the Africa Cup of Nations, while noting that the Central African Republic will be eager to continue their development on the continental stage.
Rohr also pointed out a significant advantage in the draw structure, noting that Benin have avoided being grouped with a host nation.
As a result, he believes two qualification places are realistically available for the teams finishing first and second, increasing the importance of consistency across all fixtures.
The Benin coach stressed that his side cannot afford to treat any match lightly, with every point likely to play a decisive role in the final standings.
He described the group as open rather than straightforward, emphasising that his team will need to remain competitive throughout the campaign rather than relying on individual results.
For Benin, the immediate focus will be on staying within reach of Burkina Faso while ensuring they do not drop crucial points against Mauritania and the Central African Republic.
Rohr has made it clear that his squad will not approach the qualifiers with a defensive mindset or acceptance of underdog status.
Preparation for the campaign is already underway, with Rohr confirming plans for a training camp beginning on May 25.
The coach is also hopeful that the national team will be able to return to the Stade de l’Amitié, which has not hosted the team for some time, in a boost for both players and supporters.
Despite some injury concerns and key absences in the squad, Rohr remains positive about the team’s direction.
With planning underway and expectations building, Benin are preparing for a qualification campaign they believe remains firmly within reach.
