Beninese Football Faces Crisis as Government and Federation Clash
Benin’s football scene is currently at a standstill following a major dispute between the Ministry of Sports and the Benin Football Federation (FBF). Since April 1, the government has withdrawn the FBF’s accreditation and suspended the local football championship, citing alleged mismanagement by the federation’s leadership under Augustin Ahouanvoebla.
According to Africa Top Sports, a FIFA delegation led by Primo Corvaro arrived in Benin on May 3 to assess the situation. The mission met with representatives from the Olympic Sports Committee, members of the FBF, and the Minister of Sports to gather information.
The FIFA report will play a crucial role in determining whether the Beninese government has unlawfully interfered in the federation’s affairs. Depending on the findings, sanctions could be imposed on Beninese football, potentially deepening the crisis.
The outcome of this investigation will be pivotal for the future of football in Benin, as the local league remains suspended and the country awaits clarity on the governance of its football institutions.
