Benin’s preparations for their upcoming international friendlies have suffered a setback after defender Olivier Verdon picked up an injury while playing for Ludogorets Razgrad in Bulgaria.

The 30-year-old defender, a key figure for the Benin national football team, was forced off in the 67th minute during Thursday, March 19, league action against FK Spartak Varna, with medical tests later confirming that he will be unavailable for the upcoming international break.

This development comes as a major blow for Benin head coach Gernot Rohr, who had planned to rely on Verdon’s experience in defense as the Cheetahs prepare to face Liberia national football team and Guinea national football team on March 27 and 31, respectively.

“Unfortunately, Olivier Verdon sustained an injury and will be unable to participate in our next training camp,” Rohr confirmed, highlighting the importance of the defender to the squad’s plans.

To fill the void left by Verdon, Rohr has called up promising young defender Jordan Lawson, who currently plays for Huesca U19. The move signals an opportunity for the youngster to gain valuable experience at the senior international level while providing Benin with defensive cover ahead of the friendlies.

Verdon’s absence will be felt, given his leadership at the back and familiarity with the national team’s tactical setup. However, the inclusion of Lawson provides fresh energy and allows Rohr to explore potential future options in defense.

Benin will now shift focus to integrating Lawson into the squad quickly and ensuring that the team remains prepared for both fixtures. The Cheetahs are determined to maintain momentum and achieve positive results despite the unexpected setback in defense.

As the international break approaches, all eyes will be on Rohr and his reshuffled defensive line to see how effectively Benin adapts to life without one of their most experienced players.
