If Jean Pierre Papin signs the contract, he will become the 9th French coach for the Benin national football team since its first participation in the African Cup of Nations in 2004. Previous French coaches for the team include Hervé Revelli, Serge Devèze, Didier Notheaux, Michel Dussuyer, Jean Marc Nobilo, Denis Goavec, and Manuel Amoros. The team has participated in three African Cups of Nations in 2004, 2010, and 2012 but has not advanced past the first round.
