Benbouali celebrates unforgettable Algeria call-up

Algerian striker Nadhir Benbouali has described his recent call-up to the national team as “a moment I will never forget”, capping a dramatic turnaround in a career that had been clouded by frustration at club level.

The forward’s journey over the past months has been marked by setbacks and renewed opportunity, with his struggles at Sporting Charleroi contrasting sharply with his rise onto the international stage.

Speaking to DH Les Sports, Benbouali reflected on a period that tested both his patience and resilience.

During his time in Belgium, the Algerian found himself sidelined despite encouraging displays during a loan spell in Hungary.

The lack of consistent opportunities left him disappointed, but not defeated. “I wanted to establish myself at Charleroi. I think I didn’t get my chance in the long run, but it taught me a lot,” he said, acknowledging that his ambitions at the club ultimately did not materialise.

Rather than dwell on the setback, Benbouali chose to view the experience as a learning curve. The former Paradou player opted to move on in search of regular playing time, a decision that proved decisive in reviving his form.

With more minutes on the pitch, he gradually rebuilt his confidence and rediscovered the qualities that had once marked him out as a promising talent.

That resurgence did not go unnoticed. His performances earned him a long-awaited opportunity with the Algerian national side, a moment he had dreamed of since childhood.

The call came directly from head coach Vladimir Petković, making the occasion even more memorable for the striker.

“It’s a moment I’ll never forget,” Benbouali said, underlining the emotional significance of representing his country at senior level.

The experience has not only validated his perseverance but also injected fresh ambition into his career.

Now part of the national setup, Benbouali is determined to build on this breakthrough. With major international competitions on the horizon, including the World Cup, the striker is focused on securing his place in the squad and making the most of every opportunity that comes his way.
