Standard Liège appears to be in a strong position to secure the Belgian championship title, currently leading in play-offs 1 with 43 points after their recent victory over Zulte Waregem (4-1). However, Mehdi Carcela, the Moroccan international midfielder for Standard Liège, expressed dissatisfaction with his performance this season in an interview with the Dutch-speaking Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad.
Carcela acknowledged that he is not having an excellent season and attributed it to needing time to regain his form after returning from Anzhi. He mentioned that other players who left the club also experienced a similar adjustment period. Carcela also commented on the overall level of the Belgian championship, noting that previously, each team had standout players capable of making a difference, but that this dynamic has changed. He observed that the intensity and atmosphere in the league are now less pronounced.
