Jérôme Efong Nzolo Retires from Refereeing After Failed Fitness Tests
Jérôme Efong Nzolo, the Belgian-Gabonese referee, has decided to retire from officiating. The announcement was made this morning by Africa Top Sports. Despite a long career, Nzolo never officiated in Belgium’s top football division, as he failed three consecutive fitness tests.
He was scheduled to take a fourth test this Thursday but ultimately chose not to proceed. “I want to say that if I made this decision, it was in no way for sporting or physical reasons,” Nzolo explained. “The staff weighed in on my choice, and the balance tipped towards retirement.”
Nzolo clarified that he did not fail the test but opted out, stating, “I didn’t even take them.” The decision had been on his mind for some time, and he emphasized that it was not a spur-of-the-moment choice. “Football and refereeing are my passions, and I couldn’t just give it all up without even thinking about it,” he added.
Looking ahead, Nzolo expressed uncertainty about his future. “I have absolutely no idea what tomorrow will bring. Right now, I’m busy with my son playing basketball, and I’m going to enjoy my family. That’s all I know right now. God will decide what I do in the future. But I’m sure that one day, a door will open.”
While his refereeing career may be over, Nzolo’s love for football and his family remains strong as he transitions into the next phase of his life.
