Addressing the media in a press conference following the match, coach Sabri Lamouchi shed light on the circumstances surrounding his decision.
“The inclusion of the young goalkeeper was not part of our initial plans. Copa was slated to start and captain the team against his adoptive country, but a calf strain prevented his participation. It was essential not to take any unnecessary risks with his fitness, allowing him to recover fully for his club commitments,” stated Lamouchi.
Despite the goalkeeper change, Ivory Coast managed to secure a draw against Belgium, with the match concluding in a 2-2 stalemate.
