Loïs Openda suffers injury setback

Olympique Lyonnais have confirmed that Belgian forward Loïs Openda will be sidelined for several weeks after suffering a fracture to his fibula during Friday’s Ligue 1 clash against former club RC Lens.

The 26-year-old, who joined Lyon on loan from Juventus, was forced off after sustaining the injury following a series of fouls during the encounter.

In a statement released on Monday, Lyon confirmed that medical examinations had revealed a fracture to the Belgian’s fibula. The French club also expressed strong dissatisfaction with the refereeing during the match, criticising what they considered a lack of protection for their player.

Although Lyon did not provide a definitive timeline for Openda’s recovery, the club indicated that he would be unavailable until at least the next international break in mid-November.

His absence comes at a crucial stage of the campaign, with Paulo Fonseca’s side pursuing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League while also competing in the UEFA Europa League.

Openda’s injury will limit Lyon’s attacking options in the coming weeks, forcing Fonseca to consider alternative solutions as the club navigates a demanding schedule.

The situation could create an opportunity for young forward Rémi Himbert to earn more playing time after seeing limited action so far this season.

Lyon will now hope Openda makes a full recovery as they seek to maintain their momentum in domestic and European competitions.
