Belgian-Ivorian Defender Lucas Noubi set to join Deportivo La Coruña after Standard Liège exit

Belgian-Ivorian Defender Lucas Noubi set to join Deportivo La Coruña after Standard Liège exit

Lucas Noubi is poised to join Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña following the expiry of his contract with Standard Liège at the end of June, marking the start of a new chapter in the Belgian-Ivorian defender’s career.

The 20-year-old centre-back will leave the club where he progressed through the youth system, choosing not to renew his deal after limited first-team opportunities.

Noubi, who has found consistent minutes hard to come by at senior level, is now preparing for a move to Spain’s Segunda División with Deportivo, a club aiming to return to the upper tiers of Spanish football.

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, negotiations between Noubi and Deportivo have already been completed.

The deal is believed to be done, with only the official confirmation pending. He will join the Spanish outfit as a free agent, once his current contract with Standard Liège officially ends on 30 June.

While there had been interest in Noubi from a number of German lower-league clubs during the winter transfer window, no concrete offers materialised.

This opened the door for Deportivo to make their move and secure the services of the promising young Belgian-Ivorian without competition.

Throughout the 2023–24 season, Noubi made just two appearances in Belgium’s top flight and featured 15 times for Standard’s reserve team in the third division.

With limited opportunities to break into the senior squad, the decision to pursue playing time elsewhere appears both timely and strategic.

Noubi’s transfer to Spain signals a significant turning point in his career. The move offers the chance for more regular football and exposure to a different tactical environment—crucial factors for a young player seeking to make his mark on the professional stage.

Deportivo La Coruña, historically one of Spain’s most iconic clubs, have recently been rebuilding and focusing on youth to help them climb back to La Liga.

The Belgian-Ivorian defender’s arrival fits into Deportivo’s long-term vision, adding depth to their defensive options while offering Noubi the chance to grow in a competitive setting.

The Segunda División is known for its physical demands and tactical rigour, a testing ground that could provide the perfect conditions for the 20-year-old to mature as a player.

Barring any unforeseen developments, Deportivo are expected to formally announce the signing in the coming days. Noubi is likely to join the squad ahead of their pre-season preparations as he begins the next phase of his journey in professional football.

As he prepares to leave Standard Liège—the club that nurtured his early development—Lucas Noubi will be aiming to carve out a bigger role at Deportivo and prove his worth at a higher level. For the young Belgian-Ivorian defender, the move represents both a fresh opportunity and a bold step into the future.
