Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans voiced his frustration following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday night.
The match, played at the Etihad Stadium, saw Villa concede a stoppage-time goal from Matheus Nunes, leaving them with a bitter taste after a resilient performance.
Tielemans, who hails from Sint-Pieters-Leeuw, Belgium, has Congolese heritage through his mother.
The 27-year-old has been a key figure in Villa’s midfield since joining from Leicester City in 2023.
His technical prowess and leadership have been instrumental in the team’s push for European qualification.
Reflecting on the match, Tielemans expressed disappointment: “So frustrating to lose in the last minute of the game where we fought really hard – we blocked pretty much everything.”
He acknowledged the nature of football, stating, “To lose like that on that last action is so frustrating. We got the first chance and they got the last one. They score, we don’t, that’s football.”
Despite the setback, Tielemans remains optimistic about Villa’s prospects.
“We have four games in the Premier League left. We’re going to give our all and hopefully we get a good result in and be back where we want to be in the Champions League positions,” he said.
Looking ahead, he highlighted the upcoming FA Cup semi-final as a crucial opportunity: “Saturday, we have the semi-final which we can hopefully win. Now we have full focus on that.”
Aston Villa’s next fixture is a pivotal FA Cup semi-final, where they aim to secure a spot in the final and continue their pursuit of silverware this season.
