Former Bayern Munich defender Markus Babbel has voiced strong support for head coach Vincent Kompany, asserting that the Belgian manager retains the full backing of the club’s board despite recent setbacks in the UEFA Champions League.
Kompany, who is of Congolese heritage, assumed the managerial role at Bayern Munich with aspirations to lead the club to European glory.
However, Bayern’s recent 2-2 draw against Inter Milan, resulting in a 4-3 aggregate loss, has reignited discussions about Kompany’s ability to handle high-pressure matches.
Babbel, who spent 17 years at Bayern Munich across two separate spells, acknowledged the disappointment of the Champions League exit but emphasized that the team was not without merit.
He noted, “They were dominant, they were on the field, had more chances to score than Inter. But they didn’t score the goals up front and made some slight mistakes at the back.”
Despite the elimination, Babbel is confident that Kompany has the unwavering support of Bayern’s football executives, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund.
He remarked, “He (Kompany) has total support from (football chiefs) Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, they are total fans of him, so nothing will happen.”
Looking ahead, Babbel emphasized the importance of securing the Bundesliga title to maintain momentum and confidence within the squad.
He added, “But he has to win, of course. If he doesn’t win, he’ll have a problem.
“He’ll have a huge problem. But we assume that with five games and six points in advance, it should be doable (the Bundesliga title) and they should be able to do it.”
