Belgian-Congolese coach Vincent Kompany earns high praise from Matthäus as Bayern’s dominance continues
German football legend Lothar Matthäus has hailed Vincent Kompany’s impact at Bayern Munich, describing the Belgian-Congolese coach as a transformative leader.
Kompany, who guided Bayern to the Bundesliga title in his debut season, was rewarded last week with a new contract running until 2031.
His success has impressed Matthäus, who believes the former defender has restored stability and unity at the club after years of inconsistency.
“With Kompany, they’ve made a great move,” Matthäus told Sky Deutschland.
“He’s involved the players in his decisions again, with clear, open, and honest discussions. He’s reinvented Bayern after four or five years of instability.”
The former Bayern and Germany captain added, “If they maintain this level, they’re among the big favourites for the Champions League.”
Bayern have been unstoppable this season, extending their perfect start with a 3-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Matchday 8.
Despite arriving late at Borussia-Park due to traffic delays, Kompany’s side dominated the match after Jens Castrop’s red card. Goals from Joshua Kimmich, Raphaël Guerreiro and teenager Lennart Karl sealed the victory.
The result means Bayern have collected 24 points from eight matches, equalling their best-ever start to a Bundesliga campaign.
Their +26 goal difference and 30 goals scored mark new records in Germany’s top flight.
Bayern’s league form has been matched by flawless performances in Europe and domestic cups.
They have won all 13 matches this season across competitions, a feat matched only by AC Milan’s 1992/93 team among Europe’s top leagues.
Under Kompany’s leadership, Bayern appear to have rediscovered their trademark ruthlessness.
The reigning champions have yet to concede first in any match, and their performances suggest they could surpass Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten 2023/24 title-winning run.
For Matthäus and many others, Kompany’s revolution at Bayern has restored belief that the club remains Europe’s gold standard.
