Yacine Brahimi Wins BBC African Player of the Year Award
Despite being left out of the final five nominees for the CAF African Player of the Year award, Yacine Brahimi has earned major recognition elsewhere. The FC Porto midfielder has been named the BBC African Footballer of the Year 2014, becoming the first Algerian and the first Maghreb player to win the award.
Voted for by internet users on the BBC website, the award honors Brahimi’s impressive performances throughout the year. From shining with Granada in Spain to an impactful move to Porto and a strong showing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Brahimi has risen to prominence.
“It is a great honor for me to receive this magnificent trophy. I owe it to my country, Algeria, and to all the people who voted for me. It is also a trophy for the whole of Africa, because it rewards an African player. So I am really very happy. This trophy will give me more strength, more desire to work, to improve, and to continue to perform well,” Brahimi told the BBC.
This recognition further cements Brahimi’s place as one of the most talented and promising African footballers of his generation.
