Bayern ready to extend Max Eberl contract beyond 2027 after summer planning wins board backing

Bayern Munich are preparing to hand sporting director Max Eberl a contract extension beyond 2027, with senior figures at the club said to be highly satisfied with his recent work despite earlier uncertainty over his future.

German journalist Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sport Germany reports that internal expectations now point clearly towards a new, longer deal for Eberl, with no signs that an early departure has ever been on the table. On the contrary, his position has strengthened in recent weeks.

The shift comes after Bayern’s honorary president Uli Hoeneß publicly rowed back on comments he made before the DFB-Pokal final, when he had cast doubt over Eberl’s long-term role at the club.

“I was very angry with myself. I did not deal with Max in the right way before the cup final (when I questioned his future at Bayern Munich), and I apologised to him,” Hoeneß said on Thursday.

Asked directly whether he expected Eberl’s contract to be renewed, Hoeneß replied: “At the moment, I would say the likelihood of that is 100%.”

Eberl’s future on supervisory board agenda

According to Plettenberg, Eberl’s contract situation will be one of the central items at Bayern’s next supervisory board meeting, scheduled for August. The board, including Hoeneß, is understood to be pleased with the club’s early squad planning for upcoming seasons.

This sense of satisfaction has been reinforced by recent transfer activity, particularly the signings of Germany defender Nathanael Brown and Morocco international Ismael Saibari, both seen internally as part of a coherent long-term strategy.

Hoeneß has been especially impressed by Saibari, noting that the attacking midfielder first caught his eye at the 2026 World Cup. The Moroccan’s performances at that tournament left a strong enough impression to contribute to Bayern’s pursuit of his signature.

Focus turns to outgoings

With key reinforcements already secured, Bayern’s hierarchy is now concentrating on shaping the outgoing side of their summer business.

Plettenberg reports that Joao Palhinha, Sacha Boey and Bryan Zaragoza are among the leading candidates to leave the club during the current transfer window, as Bayern look to streamline the squad following their early moves in the market.

The potential departures would form the next phase of Eberl’s restructuring work, which has been viewed positively by the club’s leadership and has fed into the push to secure his services on an extended contract.

Background tensions eased

The latest developments mark a clear change in tone from the controversy that surrounded Hoeneß’s pre-cup-final remarks, which had fuelled speculation about Eberl’s prospects at the Allianz Arena.

Those comments have since been publicly retracted by Hoeneß, who has emphasised his regret and offered a personal apology to Eberl. The reconciliation, combined with approval of Bayern’s transfer planning, has effectively removed doubts over the sporting director’s status.

With the supervisory board set to formalise its position in August, Bayern appear ready to move from internal consensus to a concrete agreement that would keep Eberl in charge of sporting operations well beyond 2027.
