Bayern Munich are reportedly assessing the possibility of bringing in Ghanaian defender Daniel Amartey on a short-term deal as the club continues to grapple with a spate of defensive injuries.
According to German outlet Merkur, the 30-year-old, who is currently unattached following his departure from Turkish side Besiktas, has emerged as a potential solution to Bayern’s depleted backline.
With injuries ruling out key defensive figures including Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies, and Hiroki Ito, the Bundesliga champions are exploring emergency reinforcement options.
Amartey boasts a wealth of experience across several European leagues. He began his professional journey in Sweden with Djurgårdens IF, quickly earning a reputation for his physicality, composure, and positional awareness.
Those qualities soon saw him secure a move to Danish giants FC Copenhagen, where his performances in domestic and European competition further elevated his profile.
In 2016, Amartey made the leap to the English Premier League, joining Leicester City during their remarkable title-winning campaign.
While he arrived midway through the season and did not feature prominently in the title run-in, he would go on to become a consistent figure in Leicester’s defensive setup over the years.
Comfortable as a centre-back or a holding midfielder, Amartey’s adaptability and work rate made him a valuable asset during his seven-year stint in England.
After leaving Leicester in 2023, he joined Besiktas in the Turkish Super Lig. Despite flashes of quality, his time in Istanbul was relatively short-lived, and he is now a free agent—an availability that Bayern Munich have reportedly taken notice of as they weigh temporary reinforcements.
Bayern’s defensive depth has been severely tested in recent weeks. Injuries to first-team regulars have prompted the club’s hierarchy to consider alternative options outside the transfer window.
Alongside Amartey, the names of Ivorian full-back Serge Aurier—formerly of Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur—and Portuguese left-back Mario Rui, known for his time with Roma and Napoli, have also been floated.
However, despite the growing interest, Bundesliga rules pose a major obstacle. The league’s regulations do not permit the registration of free agents outside the official transfer windows, effectively ruling out an immediate move for Amartey or any of the other candidates under consideration.
As Bayern seeks solutions to its defensive dilemma, the club will have to rely on internal options or wait until the next transfer window to make any official additions.
In the meantime, the speculation surrounding Amartey underscores the Bavarians’ urgency and the level of trust his experience and versatility continue to command in European football circles.
Whether or not the Ghanaian international joins Bayern remains uncertain, but his availability during a period of crisis has ensured his name remains firmly in the conversation.
