Mario Götze Eyes Bigger Role at Bayern Following World Cup Glory
Just weeks after etching his name into football history with the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, Mario Götze is eager to translate international success into a more prominent role at Bayern Munich.
The 22-year-old German midfielder, who came off the bench to score the decisive goal against Argentina in Brazil, has expressed his desire to take on greater responsibility under Bayern head coach Pep Guardiola. Speaking to German daily Bild, Götze made it clear he’s ready to step up.
“I want to take more responsibility for our game,” he stated. “Together with my teammates at FC Bayern and the national team, I want to make sure we have another successful year.”
Despite his World Cup heroics, Götze has yet to fully cement himself as a first-choice starter at Bayern. Last season, he often found himself rotated within Guardiola’s deep and talented squad. Still, his numbers remain impressive: across the past two campaigns with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern, Götze has made 96 appearances, netted 34 goals and provided 35 assists.
“After the World Cup title, I just want to play football and enjoy it,” he added. “I’m used to generating high expectations.”
The midfielder, who joined Bayern from Dortmund in 2013, remains a key asset for both club and country, even if not always part of the starting XI. His versatility and technical ability offer Bayern an important creative outlet, particularly as the Bundesliga champions prepare for another demanding season at home and in Europe.
Götze is set to rejoin his club teammates in the United States this Wednesday as Bayern continue their pre-season tour, where he will look to make an impression and strengthen his claim for a larger role in Guardiola’s plans.
As Bayern seek to bounce back from last season’s Champions League disappointment and maintain their domestic dominance, the young playmaker is clearly focused on turning potential into presence—on both club and international stages.
