Bayern Munich aim to keep title chase on track as Michael Olise hits form at Augsburg

Bayern Munich travel to WWK Arena to face Augsburg on Saturday as they look to maintain pressure in the Bundesliga title race and claim a fourth consecutive victory.

Augsburg began the 2026-27 campaign strongly under Manuel Baum, beating Schalke 04 3-0 on the opening day before defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 a week later. Their momentum has since faded, however, with a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen on 12 September followed by a 3-2 defeat by Werder Bremen after surrendering a two-goal lead.

The draw with Leverkusen saw Michael Gregoritsch score twice for Augsburg, only for Patrik Schick to equalise in the 89th minute. Augsburg remain fourth, but their position in the European places is under threat as they sit level on seven points with Leverkusen, Mainz, Elversberg and Werder Bremen.

A 2-2 friendly draw against second-tier Hertha Berlin earlier this month added to concerns over their defence. It was the third successive match in which Augsburg had conceded twice.

Bayern are unbeaten in all competitions this season and have won six of their seven matches in 2026-27. Their only dropped points came in a goalless draw against promoted Schalke on 5 September.

Vincent Kompany’s side are second in the Bundesliga, two points behind Borussia Dortmund, who have won their opening four top-flight matches. Augsburg are nevertheless a notable opponent: they are the only team to have beaten Bayern in their past 47 league games, winning 2-1 at Allianz Arena on 24 January.

Bayern have otherwise won seven of their past eight meetings with Augsburg. Their attacking options include Michael Olise, who is one of the recommended goalscorer selections at odds of 1.95. A Bayern win with both teams to score is priced at 1.73, while Luis Diaz to score is listed at 2.05.

Augsburg will be without 19-year-old central defender Noahkai Banks, who suffered a lateral ligament knee injury while on international duty with the Germany Under-21s. Calvin Brackelmann, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Chrislain Matsima are expected to form a back three, with Marius Wolf and Hennes Behrens as wing-backs.

Tim Breithaupt remains sidelined with a toe injury, while Steve Mounie is also expected to miss the match. Han-Noah Massengo and Fabian Rieder could start in central midfield, behind Alexis Claude-Maurice and Robin Fellhauer, with Gregoritsch leading the attack.

Bayern will be without Jamal Musiala, who sustained a thigh muscle-fibre tear during the warm-up before Germany’s match against the Netherlands. As the 23-year-old continues his individual rehabilitation, Ismael Saibari could play as the number 10, alongside Olise and Diaz, behind Harry Kane.

Probable teams

Augsburg: Dahmen; Brackelmann, Gouweleeuw, Matsima; Wolf, Massengo, Rieder, Behrens; Fellhauer, Claude-Maurice; Gregoritsch.

Bayern Munich: Neuer; Laimer, Upamecano, Tah, Davies; Pavlovic, Kimmich; Olise, Saibari, Diaz; Kane.

Augsburg’s recent defensive problems could leave them vulnerable, while Bayern’s attack will approach the match with confidence. The visitors appear well placed to take all three points.
