Bayer Leverkusen rule out move for former French-Algerian striker Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema’s reported links with Bayer Leverkusen have suffered an immediate setback after the German club ruled out a move for the former France international.

The 38-year-old striker, who is currently without a club, had been linked with a surprise switch to the Bundesliga champions, with reports suggesting Leverkusen had made contact with the veteran forward.

However, sporting director Simon Rolfes has moved to dismiss the speculation.

Asked about the possibility of signing Benzema by BILD, Rolfes gave a brief response that appeared to close the door on the transfer.

“Our squad is set.”

The comments came after journalist Ilyes Kaddouri of DZfoot reported that there had been contact between Leverkusen and the Frenchman.

Benzema’s availability had added weight to the speculation, particularly given his experience at the highest level of European football.

Benzema’s social media activity fuels speculation

The transfer rumours were also given fresh momentum by Benzema’s activity on Instagram.

The former Real Madrid and Lyon striker currently follows Bayer 04 Leverkusen on the platform, alongside his former clubs Real Madrid, Olympique Lyon and Al-Ittihad.

Despite the social media link and reports of possible contact, Rolfes’ comments suggest Leverkusen are not planning to add the Ballon d’Or winner to their squad.
