Bayer Leverkusen are nearing an agreement with Liverpool to sign centre-back Jarell Quansah in a deal expected to be worth just over €40 million (£34m; $45.8m), per The Athletic.
While no official bid has been tabled yet, talks are advanced, and personal terms are not expected to pose a problem.
Quansah, who is of Ghanaian descent, has emerged as a key target for Leverkusen as they look to reinforce their defence following the departure of Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich.
The Bundesliga champions are also planning for life without Odilon Kossounou, who spent last season on loan at Atalanta, with an option to make the deal permanent.
The 22-year-old is currently representing England’s Under-21s at the European Championship in Slovakia.
Reflecting on his journey, Quansah said: “I think I can take massive learnings from the three seasons I’ve had in professional football… I’m in a very good position to take the next step.”
A product of Liverpool’s academy, Quansah enjoyed a breakthrough campaign after his debut in August 2023.
He made 25 appearances in all competitions last season, partnering Virgil van Dijk at times, although his Premier League starts were limited to five.
Should the deal be completed, it would become Leverkusen’s record transfer, surpassing the €32 million paid for Kerem Demirbay in 2019.
Quansah’s potential exit comes amid Liverpool’s ongoing transfer activity with Leverkusen. The English side are closing in on Florian Wirtz, while Jeremie Frimpong has already joined after his release clause was triggered.
Despite rejecting interest from Newcastle United last summer, Liverpool now appear willing to part ways with the promising defender, who has been capped 11 times at U21 level but is yet to make a senior international appearance.
