Bastao switches to Liepaja as Angolan defender begins Latvian adventure
Angola centre-back Bastao has joined Liepaja on a free transfer, completing his move to the Virsliga club on 14 August 2026.
The 18-year-old defender arrives from Angolan side Guelson, where he had been playing before making the move abroad. The transfer takes Bastao into Latvian football as he begins the next stage of his career with Liepaja.
Born in Luanda, Bastao stands 1.83m tall and is listed as a centre-back. He is capable of using both feet, adding a notable detail to the profile of a young defender who has now moved from Angola to Europe.
Bastao’s arrival at Liepaja follows a period in which he moved between Guelson and GD Interclube. He joined GD Interclube from Guelson on 10 September 2024, before returning to Guelson on 1 July 2025. Both of those domestic moves were recorded as free transfers.
The switch to Liepaja is the first transfer in Bastao’s career to take him outside Angola. He now joins a club competing in the Virsliga, Latvia’s national football competition, after developing through spells with Guelson and GD Interclube.
Liepaja have added the teenager to their defensive options without paying a transfer fee. Bastao’s move was registered on 14 August, with the 2026-27 season marking his first campaign at the Latvian club.
The transfer also represents a change in footballing environment for an Angolan player whose previous senior career had been based entirely in his home country. His earlier clubs, Guelson and GD Interclube, both came before the move to Liepaja.
Bastao has therefore completed a free transfer from Guelson to Liepaja and is now an Angolan defender playing in the Virsliga.
