FC Basel’s teenage forward Breel Embolo is attracting growing interest from across Europe, with Wolfsburg emerging as the frontrunners for his signature.
The 18-year-old Switzerland international has been linked with Juventus, Schalke 04 and Inter Milan, but Bundesliga side Wolfsburg are understood to be particularly keen.
Embolo has enjoyed a breakout campaign in the Swiss Super League, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. His combination of pace, power and maturity has convinced many scouts that he could make the step up to one of Europe’s top leagues.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports that talks have already begun, with Wolfsburg determined to bring the teenager to Germany despite competition from other clubs. Basel, however, remain reluctant to lose one of their brightest young talents midway through the season.
Wolfsburg, who have ambitions of establishing themselves as regular Champions League contenders, see Embolo as a long-term investment and a player capable of easing the attacking burden on their squad.
The Swiss striker has already made his mark on the international stage, earning caps for the national team and being tipped as one of the country’s future stars. His development has drawn comparisons with some of Europe’s leading forwards.
While Juventus and Inter continue to monitor the situation, Bundesliga rivals Schalke are also thought to be interested. But Wolfsburg’s early move may give them the edge in what is expected to become an intense transfer battle.
For Basel, who have built a reputation for nurturing and selling top talent, Embolo’s potential departure would be significant. The club has previously seen the likes of Mohamed Salah, Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri leave for bigger European leagues, often commanding sizeable transfer fees.
Negotiations are at an early stage, but Wolfsburg’s determination to strengthen their attack suggests Embolo could be the next big export from Swiss football.
