Bartra backs Real Betis victory after Mourinho targets their defensive approach

Marc Bartra has suggested Jose Mourinho was attempting to divert attention from Real Madrid’s defeat after criticising Real Betis’ defensive tactics following their 1-0 La Liga victory on Friday.

Mourinho, the Real Madrid manager, claimed after the match that the visitors had played primarily for a draw before securing all three points with a late winning performance. His comments prompted a response from Bartra, who said the Portuguese coach sometimes uses his public statements to shift the focus away from other issues.

Speaking to the Spanish television programme El Chiringuito, Bartra said: “I watched his documentary and I think that sometimes he likes to divert attention by talking about other things.”

The Real Betis defender, as quoted by Tribuna, added: “He is a great coach, but I prefer to talk about Real Betis and our victory.”

Bartra, who previously played for Barcelona, acknowledged that Real Madrid had produced a strong performance despite their loss. However, he insisted that Real Betis also deserved credit for the way they competed and ultimately secured the result.

“Real Madrid played a great match, but Betis did too,” he said. “We showed our character and managed to win.”

The outcome was decided by a single goal, with Real Betis holding on to claim a notable victory over Real Madrid. The match also featured a late penalty miss from Kylian Mbappe, whose effort was saved by Real Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles.

Valles’ intervention preserved the Andalusian side’s advantage and ensured that Real Madrid could not find an equaliser before the final whistle.

Bartra also highlighted the importance of maintaining the same intensity and concentration throughout matches, particularly during periods in which Real Betis are forced to defend without possession.

That discipline proved decisive against Real Madrid, as the home side resisted pressure and protected their lead until the end. Bartra’s comments reflected his belief that the result was not simply the consequence of Real Madrid’s shortcomings, but also the product of a determined performance from his own team.
