Barcelona’s rest record challenges Mourinho’s Clasico complaint

Mundo Deportivo has used historical fixture data to challenge Jose Mourinho’s claim that Real Madrid will have 24 fewer hours to prepare for Sunday’s Clasico than Barcelona.

Mourinho raised the issue after Real Madrid’s match against RB Leipzig, saying: “At the moment, we have 24 hours less than Barcelona to rest before the Clasico.”

Real Madrid played their European match at home on Wednesday, while Barcelona faced Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital on Tuesday. Barcelona were then required to make an overnight flight back to Spain.

However, the Catalan newspaper argued that the immediate scheduling difference does not tell the full historical story. It pointed out that Sunday’s Clasico will begin at 21:00, giving both teams the longest possible recovery period after their Champions League commitments.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the statistics give Barcelona a historical argument. Since the 2018-19 season, Sunday’s match will be the eighth Clasico played in October after both clubs had competed in Champions League matches during the preceding midweek.

Across those fixtures, Real Madrid have had a combined 26 days of recovery between their Champions League and La Liga matches, compared with 23 days for Barcelona, the newspaper reported.

The calculation excludes the Clasico from the 2019-20 season, which was postponed because of concerns about possible violence amid the political situation in Catalonia at the time, linked to the independence movement.

That match had originally been scheduled for a Saturday at 13:00 at Camp Nou. Barcelona had played Slavia Prague in Prague on the Wednesday, while Real Madrid had faced Galatasaray in Istanbul on the Tuesday, at the same time.

Barcelona faced more Saturday pressure

Mundo Deportivo also compared how often each side had been forced to play the Clasico on a Saturday after a European match on the previous Wednesday.

Barcelona had faced Real Madrid in those circumstances twice, while Real Madrid had done so once. The figures therefore suggest Barcelona have encountered the more demanding version of that schedule more frequently.

The report added that a 21:00 Sunday kick-off represents the latest possible slot after Champions League fixtures. Sevilla’s match against Osasuna is scheduled for Monday, coinciding with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London at 21:00.

The upcoming Clasico will therefore take place at the latest available time following the clubs’ European commitments, despite Mourinho’s complaint that Real Madrid currently have one fewer day of rest.
