Barcelona tie Hamza Abdelkarim to 2030 deal after impressive pre-season

Barcelona have extended Egyptian striker Hamza Abdelkarim’s contract until 30 June 2030, removing uncertainty over the forward’s future after his impressive performances during the club’s preparations for the new season.

The agreement was reached following negotiations with Abdelkarim’s agent, Christian Emile, and had been widely anticipated by the Spanish media in recent days. Barcelona confirmed the renewal in an announcement stating that the club and the Egyptian player had agreed to extend his contract.

The new deal reflects the confidence of the coaching staff, led by Hansi Flick, in Abdelkarim’s potential. The striker is expected to compete for a place in the first-team attack alongside the Brazilian pair Gabriel Jesus, who has recently arrived, and Raphinha, who has impressed in the central striker role since the beginning of the current season.

Barcelona moved quickly to protect rising talent

The club’s management had identified several weeks ago that Abdelkarim’s contract terms needed to be improved. His form during pre-season made the issue more urgent, with the forward finishing the preparations as Barcelona’s leading scorer.

Abdelkarim scored four goals in five matches, making a strong impression and persuading the club’s officials that action was needed to secure his future.

His performances were not the only reason for Barcelona’s decision to accelerate negotiations. The club was also concerned by the circumstances surrounding his move to Catalonia and the relatively low release clause in his previous agreement.

Abdelkarim joined Barcelona from Al Ahly after spending six months on loan with the club’s reserve side. Barcelona subsequently activated an option to make the transfer permanent for €1.5m.

However, the final cost of the deal could have risen significantly depending on variables linked to the player. At the same time, Abdelkarim’s rapid development led Barcelona to worry that his previous release clause of only €15m could leave him vulnerable to interest from other clubs.

The Catalan club therefore sought to increase the clause to €150m as part of its plan to protect the forward from potential approaches.

Barcelona’s determination was further strengthened by the recent experience of Drew, who left the club after another side paid his €6m release clause. The incident prompted the club to intensify contact with Abdelkarim’s representative.

The renewal represents a significant change in the Egyptian’s status at Barcelona. He originally arrived as a €1.5m investment, but within a short period became one of the club’s most prominent young players and one it was determined to retain.

Abdelkarim is now contracted to Barcelona until the summer of 2030, extending his stay by a year beyond the previous agreement, which was due to run until 2029.
