Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, is ramping up efforts to secure the signature of Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams in the current transfer window.
According to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Deco recently traveled to Bilbao alongside Bojan Krkic, a member of the club’s sporting management team, to advance talks for the Spanish international, who is of Ghanaian descent.
The 22-year-old winger has now become Barcelona’s prime target for the position, overtaking Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, who had previously been the top candidate.
The report indicates that Williams is seen as a perfect fit for new head coach Hansi Flick’s system.
While Diaz, 28, was initially favoured, complications surrounding a potential deal with Liverpool — who have reportedly refused to enter negotiations — made the Colombian a less viable option.
In contrast, Williams’ contract situation is viewed as more straightforward, prompting the Catalan giants to redirect their focus.
Williams had a solid season with Athletic Bilbao, featuring in 29 matches and registering five goals and five assists.
