FC Barcelona have extended Xavi Espart’s contract until the summer of 2030, rewarding the defender’s rapid progress into Hansi Flick’s first-team plans.
The agreement was announced on Thursday and includes a significant improvement to Espart’s salary, while the value of his release clause has also been substantially increased, according to Sport.
Espart had previously been tied to a deal based on reserve-team conditions which was due to expire in 2028. Barcelona therefore moved quickly to secure the future of one of the club’s most highly regarded young players.
The new contract follows an impressive start to the season and reflects the speed of Espart’s development since he began training with the first team under Flick at the start of 2026.
He gradually took on a greater role and reached a personal milestone by making his Champions League debut for the senior side.
In mid-August, Espart was informed that he had officially become a first-team player and was handed the number 12 shirt.
His versatility has made him particularly valuable to Flick. Although Espart has established himself as an inverted-footed left-back, he has also shown that he can perform reliably at right-back and in midfield.
Midfield was his main position for much of his career, giving Flick several options when selecting his team and making tactical adjustments.
Barcelona’s decision to improve Espart’s terms underlines the club’s commitment to developing young players from its academy. It also secures the present and future of a player regarded as one of the most promising members of the squad.
Barcelona announced the extension on social media with the message: “The future is his, and it is Blaugrana. Xavi Espart 2030”, accompanied by blue and red heart emojis. The post was published by FC Barcelona on 8 October 2026.
