Barcelona say Jesse Bisiwu injury is a contusion and expect Belgian winger back soon

Barcelona have eased concerns over Jesse Bisiwu after confirming the 18-year-old suffered only a contusion to his left ankle during the Catalan Cup final against Sabadell.

The Belgian winger was carried off on a stretcher during Wednesday evening’s match after sustaining a heavy blow. Images from the incident initially suggested the injury could be serious, and Bisiwu was later seen on the pitch using crutches and wearing a protective boot on his injured foot.

However, further medical examinations carried out by Barcelona on Thursday offered more encouraging news. The club said the injury was a bruise and that Bisiwu should be able to resume training shortly.

“Medical report: Jesse Bisiwu suffered a blow to his left leg during yesterday’s match. The medical tests carried out this morning have confirmed that it is only a contusion. His return to training is expected within a short period,” Barcelona said in an official statement.

The update will come as a relief to the player and the club after the nature of his departure from the final raised fears of a significant injury. Bisiwu will still be unavailable while he recovers, but Barcelona’s assessment indicates that his absence should be temporary.

Bisiwu joined Barcelona this summer and made a positive impression during pre-season. His performances earned him the opportunity to train with the first team, where he attracted attention from the coaching staff.

He was particularly influential in a friendly against Basel, scoring twice and emerging as one of the standout players in the match. Those displays helped highlight his potential as he continued his transition into the senior set-up.

His latest injury came during the Catalan Cup final against Sabadell, when the youngster was forced to leave the field in distress and required assistance from a stretcher. The initial images prompted concern among supporters, especially after he was subsequently pictured with crutches and a protective shoe.

Barcelona’s medical update has since reduced the level of alarm surrounding the incident. The club described the problem as a contusion affecting the left ankle, while its statement referred to a blow to the left leg, and said Bisiwu’s return to training would follow soon.

The teenager’s recovery will now be monitored by Barcelona’s medical staff before he resumes work with his team-mates. Although he is expected to spend a short period away from competitive action, the club’s statement indicates that the injury is not as serious as first feared.
