Barcelona right-back Hector Fort is being targeted by Borussia Dortmund, who are stepping up their efforts to complete a summer transfer for the 20-year-old.

According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo, Dortmund see Fort as a strong option as he moves closer to leaving Barcelona after falling out of Hansi Flick’s plans. The defender has been training away from the main group for several days while discussions over his future continue.

Fort is looking for a club where he can play regularly and establish himself as a first-choice player during the new season. Dortmund are currently regarded as the leading candidates to sign him, with journalist Matteo Moretto also reporting the German club’s interest.

Barcelona value Fort at between 15m and 20m euros (£12.9m-£17.2m), but they are keen to retain some control over his future. The Catalan club could therefore accept a lower initial fee if the agreement includes a sell-on percentage or a buy-back clause.

Fort’s initial preference had been to move to the Premier League. He had viewed England’s top flight as a competition where he could demonstrate his abilities after coming through Barcelona’s academy, but Dortmund’s strong involvement has changed the current picture.

The Bundesliga club have a clear need for additional cover at right-back. After Yan Couto returned from his loan spell and moved to Como, Dortmund have only Julian Ryerson listed as a senior option in that position. Fort could provide significant competition while also offering a high-level alternative for the German side.

Dortmund’s reputation for giving young players opportunities and regular minutes is another factor that could appeal to Fort. The club’s approach may offer him an environment in which he can continue his development while competing for an important role.

Fort is determined to show his potential during the forthcoming campaign after a difficult loan spell at Elche. His time there was disrupted by a dislocation to his left shoulder, an injury that prevented him from playing for a large part of the season.

A move to Dortmund would give Fort the chance to feature in a strong domestic competition in the Bundesliga. It would also offer the added attraction of Champions League football, increasing the appeal of a transfer away from Barcelona.

The German club are continuing to press for a deal, while Barcelona consider whether to sell outright or protect their long-term interest through the structure of the agreement. For now, Dortmund are considered the closest side to securing Fort’s signature.
