Spanish giants FC Barcelona are getting ready to proceed with the signing of talented youngster Nico Williams.
The La Liga champions are keen on strengthening their squad and have decided to bring in reinforcements this summer.
As widely reported, the club is prioritising the signing of Nico Williams, a player born in Spain but of Ghanaian descent.
Today, the latest information indicates that Barcelona have decided to wait until July to activate the €58 million release clause of Nico Williams’ contract with Athletic Club.
The payment is expected to be processed on either July 1 or July 2.
While Barcelona are targeting an official agreement before Williams reports for preseason training in mid-July, the winger will likely join the team slightly later due to his involvement with Spain in the Nations League.
Mundo Deportivo reports that Williams’ camp is currently negotiating with Athletic Club to structure the payment in instalments, rather than the typical lump sum. However, with tensions between the two clubs still lingering, it remains unclear whether a compromise will be reached.
Last summer, Williams opted to remain at San Mamés to help Athletic secure European football. But with Barcelona now determined to land their man, they are prepared to pay the full release clause if an agreement on staggered payments proves elusive.
Meanwhile, the Catalan club is also working to lower its wage bill in order to accommodate Williams’ registration under La Liga’s salary cap.
It is understood that Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is excited about the potential signing of Nico Williams and believes he will be a good addition to his squad.
