Barcelona are keeping watch on Palmeiras forward Eduardo Conceicao, one of Brazil’s highly rated young prospects, but any move for the teenager faces a major obstacle after his club included a €100m release clause in his first professional contract.
The 17-year-old has attracted attention from Barcelona through his performances for Brazil Under-17s at the Friendship Tournament organised by UEFA in Switzerland.
Barcelona scouts followed Conceicao during the competition, where he made an immediate impression in Brazil’s opening group match. The Palmeiras player scored a fine goal as his side beat Canada 6-0.
Brazil then suffered a 3-1 defeat by Spain before recovering with a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast. Conceicao’s displays against several of the strongest teams in international youth football have given Barcelona the opportunity to assess his current technical level at close quarters.
Despite reports of the Catalan club’s interest, sporting management led by Deco has so far limited its public position to acknowledging that Conceicao is an exceptional talent. Barcelona have not made any official move to sign him and are waiting until he reaches the age of 18.
Palmeiras, meanwhile, have acted to protect one of their most promising academy products. The club has secured Conceicao’s first professional contract, with a €100m release clause designed to deter potential interest from clubs in the European transfer market.
The teenager continues to mature and develop, although some reports have also pointed to a relative slowdown in his footballing progress. His performances in Switzerland are therefore being closely assessed as Barcelona consider whether his development merits further interest.
For now, Palmeiras have placed a substantial financial barrier between Conceicao and any potential transfer, while Barcelona’s monitoring remains informal rather than the start of an official pursuit.
