Barcelona linked Relebohile Mofokeng has garnered praise from former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Junior Khanye, who believes he is a potential Player of the Season winner in the South African Premier Soccer League.
Reports from Soccer Laduma indicate that Barcelona B is closely monitoring the young player, with Spanish media also highlighting his potential.
Mofokeng has benefited from the guidance of Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro, who has provided him a platform to showcase his abilities at a young age.
The 19-year-old has continued to impress this season, following a standout performance last year where he scored the decisive goal in the Nedbank Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns, earning him the title of Young Player of the Season.
This season, Mofokeng made headlines again by scoring in a 3-1 victory over Stellenbosch in the MTN8 final, further solidifying his reputation.
“If I say Relebohile Mofokeng, I’ve never seen a player like that after a couple of players in [the year] 2000. We don’t have to lie, we call younger players who are 23, 24,” Khanye said on 947’s MSW.
“There’s nothing wrong with that because not a lot of teams are using the so-called youngsters, especially in South Africa. But a youngster, a player like that [Mofokeng], 19 years first season showing up, second season being the contender for Player of the Season.
“Changing the game, coming off the bench in the final and scoring against one of the best teams on the continent, Sundowns. What he did is not coaching, it’s his own talent. Credit to School of Excellence. Credit also to [Joseph] ‘Duku-Duku’ Makhanya for promoting this young boy [Mohau] Nkota as well. I wish more teams can follow.”
As he prepares for a significant challenge this Saturday against Al Ahly in a CAF Champions League group match, Mofokeng’s career is poised for further growth and recognition.
