Barcelona’s decision not to sign a centre-back last summer has come under scrutiny as Alessandro Bastoni continues to impress for both Italy and Inter Milan.
The Italian defender was one of the most prominent names in the transfer market and was repeatedly linked with Barcelona during a period of uncertainty over his future. The Catalan club had been expected to strengthen in defence, but instead chose to prioritise other positions and ultimately did not sign a centre-back.
Bastoni was among the players Barcelona followed most closely. His defensive qualities and ability to fit into the footballing philosophy of German manager Hansi Flick were particularly admired, according to Catalan newspaper Sport, which described him as a “missed opportunity”.
Real Madrid also considered a move for the Italy international later in the summer, although their interest did not result in a formal offer.
Bastoni eventually remained at Inter Milan, where he continues to play an important role in the club’s plans. Inter were not prepared to negotiate his departure unless they received a substantial fee, understood to be close to €80m, effectively preventing a potential transfer.
That decision has looked increasingly significant at the beginning of this season, with Bastoni again establishing himself as a key figure in Inter’s defence. He leads the back line while also playing a central role in building attacks from the back, one of the most notable aspects of his game.
His influence has also been evident with Italy, where he has added a further dimension to his performances by scoring in both matches he played during the current international break.
Bastoni found the net in Italy’s 4-1 victory over Turkey before scoring again against France on Friday. His goal gave the Azzurri a valuable equaliser in a 1-1 draw.
Goals have not traditionally been a major feature of Bastoni’s career. Last season, he scored only twice for Inter Milan in 40 appearances.
However, he has made a more decisive contribution in front of goal at the start of the current campaign, particularly while representing Italy. His recent performances have underlined the qualities that made him an attractive option for Barcelona, even though the club ultimately decided against pursuing a deal for him.
