Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal reveals personal cost of growing fame

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has revealed the personal challenges that have come with his growing fame, saying he sometimes wishes he could enjoy everyday life without being recognised.

The 19-year-old Spain international opened up about the impact of his celebrity status during an interview with Jorge Valdano on Movistar+’s Universo Valdano.

Yamal explained that his popularity has changed how he experiences ordinary activities in Barcelona, with public attention making it difficult for him to enjoy simple moments without being noticed.

‘For me, it’s completely the opposite’

Yamal said people often view his wealth and football success as a lifestyle they would like to have, but he sees things differently.

“It always happens to me when I’m walking around Barcelona. Maybe I’m going to buy clothes, and people say, ‘I wish I were Lamine and could buy whatever I wanted,’” he said.

“For me, it’s completely the opposite,” the Spanish international added.

The Barcelona forward said he would instead like to experience the freedom that ordinary people have to sit in public or spend time outside without attracting attention.

“I wish I were you and could sit down and have something to drink on this street in peace,” he explained.

Yamal discusses life in the spotlight

Yamal has become one of Barcelona’s most recognisable players despite still being only 19, with his rise to the first team bringing significant public attention.

Movistar+ described the interview as a chance for the forward to discuss both his ambitions on the pitch and his experiences since establishing himself at Barcelona.

During the conversation, Yamal also spoke confidently about his position among the world’s leading players, naming himself and Kylian Mbappe as the two best players in football.

He also discussed his ambition to win the Ballon d’Or.

But alongside those ambitions, Yamal offered a glimpse into the less visible side of his success, explaining that fame and financial rewards have also taken away some of the simple freedoms he once enjoyed.
