Barcelona have reportedly begun negotiations with Ansu Fati over a contract extension, despite their intentions to offload him during the summer transfer window.
The Catalan club is prepared to offer Fati a new five-year deal according to Spanish outlet SPORT. However, this move is primarily aimed at restructuring his wages rather than securing his long-term future at the club.
The 22-year-old forward, who was born in Guinea-Bissau, is currently among the highest-paid players at Barcelona, earning between €13-14 million annually.
Given the club’s ongoing financial struggles, officials are looking for ways to reduce their wage bill.
One option under discussion is to extend his contract while implementing a pay cut, which would allow Barcelona to spread his salary over a longer period and reduce immediate financial strain.
Fati’s existing contract is set to expire in 2026, but there have been no strong indications of interest from other clubs. If no suitors come forward with a suitable offer, the winger could remain at Camp Nou.
Once considered one of Barcelona’s brightest young talents, Fati has struggled to reclaim his early form following a series of injuries.
Despite this, Barcelona remains keen to find a solution that balances their financial needs with the player’s future.
