Barcelona have told Paris Saint-Germain that their opening proposal for Ferran Torres falls well short of the player’s market value, despite the Spain international having already agreed personal terms with the French club.

The offer, which reached Barcelona’s board on Monday, was worth €40m, including €10m in add-ons, according to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo. Barcelona rejected the bid and are expecting a considerably higher fee before they consider allowing the 26-year-old midfielder to leave.

Ferran Torres has reportedly agreed personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain and wants to complete the move as soon as possible. However, Barcelona sources have made it clear that the club will not give its “final approval” to the transfer unless the financial terms match their valuation of the player.

Barcelona believe Ferran Torres commands a significant price in the European market. Their position is based on his performances for Spain at the most recent World Cup, where he was described as a key figure in the team that won the tournament, as well as his international experience and his age.

The Catalan club also considers the player’s current standing in the transfer market to be substantially higher than the amount proposed by Paris Saint-Germain. Although the opening bid has been turned down, Barcelona’s stance does not mean negotiations have ended.

It is considered normal during transfer discussions for a club to begin with an offer below the selling side’s expectations. Paris Saint-Germain are expected to increase their proposal gradually as they attempt to secure the Spain international before the summer transfer window closes.

Further talks between the two clubs are anticipated in the coming days, with both sides seeking an agreement that satisfies all parties. Paris Saint-Germain are aiming to strengthen their squad with players who possess significant European experience before the new season begins.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are under no pressure to accept the first offer and are relying on Ferran Torres’ profile to strengthen their negotiating position. His contribution to Spain’s World Cup success, his experience at international level and his age are all factors the club believes justify a much larger fee.

The next stage of the discussions is therefore expected to focus on whether Paris Saint-Germain can improve the financial package sufficiently to meet Barcelona’s expectations. Until then, the Catalan club will maintain its refusal to approve the proposed transfer.
